What you need to know if your disability is temporary and you can go back to the same job in a few months:

  1. Be patient and take time to recover properly. If you go back to work too soon or push yourself, your temporary disability could get worse!

  2. Obtain physician and specialist permissions to go back to work.

  3. Know the level of work load your physician and specialist are limiting you to.

  4. Get a release from all physicians and specialists, or at least the major care giver, to go back to work. Your employer will need this for insurance reasons. Most employers will not let you come back to work without it.

Here's a list of accommodations that will allow you to continue to work:

With your employer:

  • Handicap access to your workplace area.
  • Flexible work schedule.
  • Obtaining specific equipment to perform your job.

With your family and friends:

  • Transportation arrangements.
  • If needed, help getting ready.
  • Other errands that may help you, such as picking up dry cleaning, etc.

What you need to know if your disability is permanent and you can't go back to the same job, but can return to a different type of work:

  1. A vocational rehabilitation counselor may be able to help arrange training and other services to help you prepare for an alternative line of work.

  2. Every state has a vocational rehabilitation agency. Look in the government blue pages in your local phone book.

What do you need to know if your disability is permanent and you can't go back work at all? How will your life possibly change?

  1. Incorporate different planning methods of your daily activities.
  2. Living arrangements will need to be adjusted.
  3. Your line of work may change, if you're able to work at all.
  4. Vacations and other activities may be planned differently.
  5. You may need to make changes to anything that is a part of your daily routine such as house cleaning, preparing meals, personal grooming, taking medications, and health monitoring.
  6. Planning doctor visits, physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychology therapy, among others may change.
  7. Your family and friends may need counseling due to stress.

What if you need to live in a care facility?
If living at home isn't an option, then you may have to consider an adjustment in your living arrangements. Your doctor and social worker will be able to help you decide what would be best for you. Do your research on all possibilities! Be sure you talk to family and friends about your possible needs and solutions. Keep everyone involved! They need your love and support now, especially any children! Even though you may be disabled for life, don't cripple yourself or your family emotionally; everyone will be going through a difficult time. Keep this in mind and try to stay positive.
